This wine is very special to me. It comes from a beautiful 30 year old vineyard in the foothills of the Tallarook ranges, just over the river from my home block. It's got everything that I love about my local Shiraz - the power and presence of Aussie Shiraz, with the balance, elegance and fine tannins typical of the area.
When new owners took over the property, they had no desire to keep running the vineyard, and the vines were facing an uncertain future. Without the support of Naked Wines, it would have been too risky for me to put my hands up and take on the challenge and help save this stunning established vineyard.
I've handmade this wine with love to create this powerful, concentrated Shiraz - full of the intense bramble and plum fruit flavours you'd expect, balanced with toasted spice and a fine tannin structure. It's hand picked, hand plunged, gently pressed, and aged in French oak - this beautiful fruit deserves to be treated with respect, so that's what I did!

Charles and Ruth Simpson’s richer, more refined style of Grenache uses 65 year-old vines from their Languedoc vineyards. The low-cropping old vines “from two of the most coveted vineyard blocks on the domaine” deliver super-concentrated fruit, and the resulting wine is packed with rich red fruit flavours and delicious herbal notes from the wild thyme, rosemary and lavender growing in the vineyards.
Taking it up a notch, Charles & Ruth added extra power and punch by leaving the grapes to concentrate on the vines for an extra week before harvesting. And they used a greater proportion of whole bunches in the blend, while keeping the wine on skins for longer, to extract more soft ripe tannins. They then aged 25% of the juice in the poshest French oak Taransaud barrels, to provide extra complexity.
On the nose, you get lovely oak spice notes of clove and nutmeg, with sweet red fruit aromas coming in behind. More of that lush fruit comes through on the palate with red plums and cherries in balance with some powerful oak influence and more clove spice. A special wine with lots of staying power.

This might be the first heard of it - until very recently it was only ever bottled under the name ‘Côtes du Rhône Villages’ - but the tide has finally turned, and the astonishing quality of this little region has won Rasteau its own appellation. Now it's giving the Big Boys of the Rhône a run for their money.
It truly is France's best kept secret as it's pretty rare that wines from Rasteau to leave the country before every last bottle's been spoken for. Lucky for us we've got Denis, our man on the inside and shortlisted Winemaker of the Year, who's made Angels this fantastically refined, organic Rasteau Côtes du Rhône.
Take a long sniff of the vibrant nose of crushed blueberries, violet petals, marzipan, dried herbs, and black truffle, before you move on to its silky palate and stylish structure. The palate does the nose just one better, bringing flavours of black olives, black cherries, and nutmeg to the party.

For generations, the di Candilo family have grown grapes in the medieval village of Monte Odorisio in Abruzzo, in the heart of Montepulciano country. This special selection was made to honour old grandfather Panfilo, who was the first to make wines from the family’s grapes.
It’s a level up from Mario & Simona’s regular Montepulciano. It’s their really special stuff made from 40 year-old vines, and it only gets made in years when the harvest is top quality. A bureaucratic cock-up means they can’t call it a Riserva as it wasn’t registered in time. But it’s totally Riserva-quality as it meets all the strict rules around quality of fruit and oak ageing.
As you hover your nose over the deep, dark glass of wine, you’ll get heaps of ripe blackberry and boysenberry aromas. In the mouth it’s full, ripe and rounded. Juicy black forest gateau fruit flavours dominate, carrying all the way through to the finish. Layered and textured with fine chalky tannins, this classic Monte delivers power and elegance in equal measure.

Oscar's brand new wine is something really rather special. It comes from a 60 year old vineyard planted by his grandparents on the family's historic Douro Valley land. It's a hugely important place for Oscar, who with his sister, fought to save these vines from being dug up and replaced with higher yielding, profitable fruit.
Intervening as little as possible, Oscar has captured the fantastic intensity of the fruit (proving good things do come in small packages) and the character of the high-altitude vineyard, paying tribute to his grandparents.
The palate is smooth and fruit forward, pure and silky, offering up that characteristic Douro bite with perfectly balanced acidity. The finish is pure, clean as a whistle and has a triumphantly long and elegant finish complete with lingering floral flavours, fresh berries and some spice to tickle the tongue.

When Jock agreed to make a UK exclusive comeback of his bestselling Assemblage, we could barely contain ourselves. Armed with reviews from Angels who enjoyed the last vintage, Jock could see that Angels wanted that traditional, fruit forward Aussie style with just a touch more refinement, elegance and complexity.
This Assemblage doesn’t have a vintage. That’s because this free wheeling winemaker didn’t want to stick to just one. Jock selected the best juice from two different Cab Sav and Shiraz vintages grown in his premium McLaren Vale vineyards, to create the ultimate blend Angels were after.
The Shiraz is silky and vibrant with its bright, juicy fruit - plums, damsons, blackcurrants - and a good twist of black pepper. The Cab Sav brings a much deeper, belly warming quality to the table with brambly complexity, a rich seam of dark chocolate and a smoky oaked finish. Eddy bought a bottle of his Mago on tour and Angels went wild for it so we shook hands and took the lot. He's pleased as punch with his third wine for Angels and we reckon it's destined for greatness.
The name pays homage to the ancient wine buff, Mago, who wrote some of the earliest works on viticulture; teaching the ancient Greeks and Romans a thing or two about winemaking!
Angels who crack it open now can expect an elegant fruit bomb of a red, but as it ages, the lush oakiness will break onto centre stage and enter a delicious duet with all that fruit. It's a win-win really!

Carménère has become, for many people, the emblematic grape for Chile. I want to show this variety in different styles, so I made this Carmenere with no oak. It is fresh and lighter, and hopefully will appeal to lots of Angels.
Naked Wines has supported me, first by trusting in my abilities as a winemaker and secondly by providing the money that was needed to get my hands on the very best grapes.
The Carménère has spices and juicy black fruit. It is a very expressive wine, but with great softness. My favourite pairing is with pork ribs or empanadas.
