Naked's original Chilean rebel... now a sister-powered double act
-
To growers back home in Chile, Connie’s a bit of a folk hero: she backs tiny vineyards, pays fairer prices, and fights for old-school Chilean varieties farmed the traditional way. That rebel streak got her the sack at a big winery (their loss) but turned out to be her making. Angels funded her first vintage, and she’s been part of the Naked story since the beginning (fun fact: she was literally our first-ever winemaker).

Marianne is Connie’s half-sister and these days, very much her partner-in-crime. They grew up apart (Connie in Chile, Marianne in Europe) but in 2011, after a Naked Tasting Tour, Connie visited Marianne in Berlin. That trip sparked a tradition of joyful summer reunions – until the sisters realised their strengths were perfectly matched and decided to join forces.

Connie’s wines have always been about showing what Chile can do when you treat the fruit (and the people who grow it) properly. They’re high-quality and ridiculously drinkable – the kind Angels come back for again and again. Now her winemaking vision is amplified by Marianne’s creative flair. Giving even more reasons to fall in love with the wines and the women behind them.

Connie and Mariane's Story
Connie Schwaderer has always been the kind of winemaker who backs herself ? and the people around her. Back in Chile, growers see her as a bit of a folk hero, because she?s spent years championing the little guys: tiny vineyards, traditional farming, old-school Chilean varieties, and fairer prices for the locals who do the hard graft. It?s exactly the sort of attitude that doesn?t always go down well in big, corporate wineries? and sure enough, Connie?s rebellious streak eventually got her the sack. Turns out, it was the best thing that could?ve happened.
That?s when Angels stepped in. Connie went independent and joined Naked in 2008 as our very first winemaker. ?At the time I didn?t realise what a huge opportunity it was,? she says. ?If I look back I?m very grateful. Naked has opened so many doors, for me and others. I feel much freer now, more passionate about making new wines? And one of the things I love most about making wines for Naked, is that Angels love to discover new wines.?
But here?s the twist: Naked didn?t just change Connie?s winemaking life ? it helped bring her closer to her sister, Mariane. The two are half-sisters on their dad?s side, and for years their relationship was warm but distant. ?We always had a cordial relationship,? Mariane explains, ?but we lived in separate homes? so we were often worlds apart.? Connie was busy studying agronomy; Mariane was building a life in Europe, living in Barcelona, then Berlin.
Everything shifted in June 2011, when Connie came to the UK for a Naked Wines Tasting Tour and stayed on to visit Mariane in Berlin. ?That decision transformed our relationship forever, - Mariane says, ?bringing us together as sisters, friends, and passionate food and wine lovers.? By a happy coincidence, Connie?s post-tour visits kept lining up with Mariane's birthday and their reunions became a joyful annual tradition, full of wine, long dinners, and big dreams.
Looking back, Mariane calls it ?a clear turning point? ? the moment they realised how naturally they complemented each other: Connie with the winemaking, Mariane with design and communication. And in 2015, those summer meet-ups became something bigger: a true sister-powered partnership, built on trust and a shared love of making wines they could be proud of.
