Arco was on the point of going bust in 2020 when the SA wine industry was hit by Covid, just as he was recovering from a battle with cancer. Thankfully, our very own Johan Kruger put him in touch with us, and Angel support helped keep him afloat. Arco’s now sourced and blended this super-premium wine to pay you back while helping out some of his winemaker mates who’ve also been hit hard by Covid.
This juice would normally end up in a famously posh boutique wine that we’ve sworn not to mention (it’s a doozy) but because of South Africa’s lockdowns and bans, it was sitting unsold in tanks. Arco’s emptied the tanks to bring this first-class wine to you while putting some money back in the bank for his mates.
This is a lovely well-rounded Cabernet Sauvignon from one of the warmer regions in South Africa. It’s created a wine that on the nose exudes blackberry notes as well as some eucalyptus and sweet spice. The mouthfeel is full and robust with silky soft tannins and flavours of cherry, plums and dark chocolate. Yummy.

I've sourced the grapes for this wine from a single patch of dry-grown Shiraz from the White Hut District of the Clare Valley. Once the grapes have been pressed I ferment part of the juice in oak and then mature for an extra 3 months to increase the complexity and depth of the wine.
My Clare Valley Shiraz has wonderful hints of violet and white pepper, which combine with the cedar oak to give the wine length and persistense.
The last vintage of my Clare Valley Shiraz was insanely popular over in Australia, and I'm excited to see how Angels in the UK enjoy it.

The name is a tribute to Joseph Gregoire, the first Lieubeau, who was left abandoned as an orphan in the porch of the hospital in Nantes in 1816. He was the founder of both our family and winery.

For generations, the di Candilo family have grown grapes in the medieval village of Monte Odorisio in Abruzzo, in the heart of Montepulciano country. This special selection was made to honour old grandfather Panfilo, who was the first to make wines from the family’s grapes.
It’s a level up from Mario & Simona’s regular Montepulciano. It’s their really special stuff made from 40 year-old vines, and it only gets made in years when the harvest is top quality. A bureaucratic cock-up means they can’t call it a Riserva as it wasn’t registered in time. But it’s totally Riserva-quality as it meets all the strict rules around quality of fruit and oak ageing.
As you hover your nose over the deep, dark glass of wine, you’ll get heaps of ripe blackberry and boysenberry aromas. In the mouth it’s full, ripe and rounded. Juicy black forest gateau fruit flavours dominate, carrying all the way through to the finish. Layered and textured with fine chalky tannins, this classic Monte delivers power and elegance in equal measure.

Eddy bought a bottle of his Mago on tour and Angels went wild for it so we shook hands and took the lot. He's pleased as punch with his third wine for Angels and we reckon it's destined for greatness.
The name pays homage to the ancient wine buff, Mago, who wrote some of the earliest works on viticulture; teaching the ancient Greeks and Romans a thing or two about winemaking!
Angels who crack it open now can expect an elegant fruit bomb of a red, but as it ages, the lush oakiness will break onto centre stage and enter a delicious duet with all that fruit. It's a win-win really!
