In times before whizzy tech and gigantic steel tanks, grape juice was left to ferment on its own accord, spontaneously bursting into action when the conditions were just right. It's a technique winemaker Kobie Viljoen is passionate about, and the old-school method has given this Chardonnay its smooth, creamy, rich almondy flavour.
To geek-out further still, Kobie can clearly define where all the flavours in his mouth-watering Chardonnay come from. Only half of the wine was oaked, which gives it its pale straw, with flecks-of-gold appearance. It's bursting with citrus fruit and juicy apple flavours from the grapes, and finishes soft and smooth with hints of delicious cinnamon, caramel and vanilla from some time spent in fancy French oak barrels.
Global lockdowns have hit the family-run winery hard, but thanks to Angel funding, they can continue to source premium grapes from all over Western Cape and craft their high-end wines.

Arco was on the point of going bust in 2020 when the SA wine industry was hit by Covid, just as he was recovering from a battle with cancer. Thankfully, our very own Johan Kruger put him in touch with us, and Angel support helped keep him afloat. Arco’s now sourced and blended this super-premium wine to pay you back while helping out some of his winemaker mates who’ve also been hit hard by Covid.
This classy Syrah comes from the Simonsberg mountain area of Stellenbosch where the higher altitude produces nice slow ripening and gives the wine a great floral character. We'll let Arco explain it to you for himself...
'This is a beautiful Syrah more in the Rhone style, showing a lovely perfumed nose of violets and some lavender, as well as a little white pepper. The palate is more fruit forward than oaky, showing lovely plum and blackberry flavours, finishing with a hint of sweet spice.'

We sourced grapes from a handful of exceptional vineyards in two different subregions of the Barossa Valley – Kalimna in the west, which provided fruit with great fruit intensity and ripe flavours, and Ebenezer in the north, which yields fruit with great concentration, tannin and structure.
2020 was a very strong vintage for Barossa Shiraz and that’s reflected in this delicious wine. It’s a dense purple-black in the glass, with powerful aromas of blackberry and blood plum, and hints of vanilla, dark chocolate and star anise. The palate is opulent, with concentrated forest fruits supported by tobacco, mocha, graphite and toasty oak flavours. Full tannins and rich, ripe structure give the wine great power and a long finish.
It’s drinking beautifully now and goes wonderfully well with aged hard cheeses like gouda, cheddar or mimolette. But if you’re inclined to wait, it will age well over 6-10 years in optimum cellaring conditions.

Richard has made this wine exclusively with his Angels in mind, using grapes normally reserved to make wines with much heftier price tags. As luck would have it, Richard happens to be mates with the grower and smooth talked his way into securing these premium grapes for a keen price.
The big idea behind Richards Syrah is to pay homage to the land it was grown from. With its graceful freshness of flavour, plush crushed velvet texture and juicy fruit profiles of red plums and blackberries, Richard is tipping his hat to classic Rhone Syrah but with a twist of South African style.
A rich ruby red in colour, this is a bottle that talks the talk with aromas of lavender, clove, sea spray, and vanilla, before proceeding to walk the walk with mouthwatering flavours of dark orange chocolate, black raspberries and morello cherry.

If you’re a fan of Portuguese wines, you need to give critically-acclaimed winemaker Joao Pires’ brand new Aventureiro Tinto a whirl. This seriously moreish, fruity nectar is an absolutely classic Douro Valley red, made by a born and bred native of the region.
Having grown up among the riverside terraces and elevated vineyards of the Douro, Joao has an intricate knowledge of the region and knows where to find the best parcels of fruit. He was so excited to create this incredible new Tinto just for you, to show off the incredible quality and class his region has to offer.
It’s a delicious blend of 5 different Portuguese grapes all wrapped up in a warm oaky hug, with layers upon layers of flavour and complexity. It’s packed with rich dark fruits, bramble and liquorice, and notes of black pepper and olive with nice tannins on the finish. This wine is already super-yummy now, but give it a few years to age and that flavour and complexity will just multiply in heaps and spades.

Herbert’s newest Grüner Veltliner is one of his most exciting yet, hailing from a very special plot in the Austrian Weinviertel region. Although this is a white wine, you’ll find that this bottle has a lively fizz to it. Decant and then gently shake your wine before drinking and you will be rewarded richly!
Kalkvogel is Herbert’s top location to work with. Here his vines grow on idyllic south facing slopes with pure sandstone soils, which makes Herbert's job an incredibly easy one. The grapes need barely any intervention in the winery - they bring bags of purity and refinement to the glass all on their own.
This doesn’t mean that Herbert can just pop his feet up however. His vines are farmed biodynamically so the deep, lively flavours of the grapes can really shine through. There is a natural smokeyness to this wine, effortlessly offset by delightful yellow stone fruit flavours.

Charles and Ruth Simpson’s richer, more refined style of Grenache uses 65 year-old vines from their Languedoc vineyards. The low-cropping old vines “from two of the most coveted vineyard blocks on the domaine” deliver super-concentrated fruit, and the resulting wine is packed with rich red fruit flavours and delicious herbal notes from the wild thyme, rosemary and lavender growing in the vineyards.
Taking it up a notch, Charles & Ruth added extra power and punch by leaving the grapes to concentrate on the vines for an extra week before harvesting. And they used a greater proportion of whole bunches in the blend, while keeping the wine on skins for longer, to extract more soft ripe tannins. They then aged 25% of the juice in the poshest French oak Taransaud barrels, to provide extra complexity.
On the nose, you get lovely oak spice notes of clove and nutmeg, with sweet red fruit aromas coming in behind. More of that lush fruit comes through on the palate with red plums and cherries in balance with some powerful oak influence and more clove spice. A special wine with lots of staying power.
