About the wine
Classy Syrah from the Simonsberg mountain area of Stellenbosch
- Arco was on the point of going bust in 2020 when the SA wine industry was hit by Covid, just as he was recovering from a battle with cancer. Thankfully, our very own Johan Kruger put him in touch with us, and Angel support helped keep him afloat. Arco’s now sourced and blended this super-premium wine to pay you back while helping out some of his winemaker mates who’ve also been hit hard by Covid.

This classy Syrah comes from the Simonsberg mountain area of Stellenbosch where the higher altitude produces nice slow ripening and gives the wine a great floral character. We'll let Arco explain it to you for himself...
-
'This is a beautiful Syrah more in the Rhone style, showing a lovely perfumed nose of violets and some lavender, as well as a little white pepper. The palate is more fruit forward than oaky, showing lovely plum and blackberry flavours, finishing with a hint of sweet spice.'

Food match
Being a foodie pairings are important to me. A bold wine like this can hold up to the intense flavors of slow-roasted barbecue pork. A great cut for this might be a pork shoulder where youÂ’ll have a rich umami-driven piece of meat. Vegetarian option is Veggie Black Bean Enchiladas with a nice strong cheese, vegans leave out the cheese!

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Arco Laarman
-
We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Arco Laarman. Introduced to Naked through our tight-knit South African winemaking community, he was a much-loved member of our winemaking family, and his exceptional talent will never be forgotten.
-
A true original, Arco's passion for wine began in his teens. At just 19, he moved to the Cape, working three vintages with a top-tier winery. Quickly rising through the ranks, he established his own winery in 2016, seeking out unique parcels of grapes. Chardonnay was a favorite, but he loved his Cinsault and Syrah too.
-
We are so grateful to have known Arco and share his passion for wine. Please join us in sending our love to his family and friends, and in raising a glass to a wonderful man. He leaves behind an incredible legacy.
