About the wine
Luca's lush blend of rare Austrian and Spanish grapes grown in Chile is something truly unique
-
Luca Hodgkinson is the genius behind some of Chile’s top artisan wines, but even he admits that Anomalia is ‘the most unusual and probably unique blend that I have ever done as a winemaker.’ Made from a mix of full-bodied Garnacha and light, fruity Blauer Portugieser, it’s a rich and luxurious wine packed full of dark and red bramble fruit flavours.
-
The real dark horse in this wine is the Blauer Portugieser, a native Austrian grape normally found in cooler European countries. It also has a tiny 3 hectare presence in Chile where Luca has access to 66% of the entire crop but it’s a tricky grape to work with because it ripens super-early. In 2019, Luca noticed that some of his Garnacha planted close by was also coming into fruit at the same time so he got a brilliant idea that he might be able to mix the two and thus, his mouth-watering ‘anomaly’ was created.
- Pour yourself a glass and the first thing you notice is the beautiful ruby colour, then you’re hit with fragrant aromas of spice and herbs that entice you in for the first sip. On the palate it’s lively with crunchy red fruits, cranberry and raspberry. This wine is lush and intense, perfect for pairing with rich pork or game but to really enjoy it at its best, our top tip is to let it breathe… give this wine an hour or so and you’ll see it evolve into something truly special.

Wine profile
Meet the winemaker - Luca Hodgkinson
Born and raised in the rugged Priorat region of Catalonia, to an English dad and French mum, Luca got a winemaking Master’s degree in Bordeaux, where he lived in the middle of St Emilion. He’s since made wines on 3 continents, and speaks 5 languages fluently.
Over the years, Luca realised he had to unlearn a lot of stuff from wine school. Like using artificial additives, pesticides, man-made irrigation and fertilizers. He believes vineyards are like people. If left to nature, they have personalities that shine through in their wines.
To Luca, wine is the most social product man has ever made, pure emotion in a glass. A mirror of the soils and location it springs from. It brings our senses down to earth. With Naked funding behind him, he’ll be able to focus 100% on what he’s best at, making his old-vine Chilean classics taste as delicious as possible.
