The Three Sods Brewery is a craft beer brewery based in East London. We specialise in brewing beer with character using a range of malts and hops from all over the world. With a similar spirit we have embarked on making small batch beers and ales. However, as there are three of us, we chose the name the Three Sods Brewery. The origin of the name Three Sods Brewery comes from Jordan's Irish background. In 1661 a law was passed in Ireland that meant all distillers must now pay tax on spirits produced for private consumption. Due to lack of adherence to the law, a further bill was passed in 1760 to make it illegal to operate a still without a license. During this time the production of Poitín (a distilled beverage distilled in a small pot made from malted barley, grain, treacle, sugar beet potatoes or whey) the production continued clandestinely. In order sell the Poitín without alerting the authorities, a house selling the sprite would paint a Sod of peat white and leave it outside their door. That way anyone in the know passing by would understand that they could come in, and acquire the illicit hooch.
