Thomas Podsednik's Story
Like no other place on earth
I have the great privilege of working in the Vienna wine-growing region – a metropolis totally unique in the wine world, where viticulture has been inextricably linked to culture, history, and the local way of life for centuries.
Few other cities combine bustling urban life and agricultural tradition in quite such a special way. Vienna’s vineyards not only shape the landscape but also embody a vibrant culture of enjoyment that has been passed down from generation to generation.
For me, Vienna is far more than just a production site; it is a living, breathing cultural space where wine is simply part of everyday life.
From the classroom to the cellar
My professional wine journey began at the Klosterneuburg School of Viticulture, where I laid the solid foundation for my lifelong passion for winemaking. Over many years, I had the opportunity to take on responsibility for major Viennese wineries and actively contribute to the qualitative development of Viennese and Lower Austrian wine.
Today, it fills me with genuine joy and gratitude to help shape the Landhaus Mayer and Rotes Haus wineries, carrying their incredibly rich history forward into the future.
The magic of the Wiener Gemischter Satz
A prime example of this city's unique identity is the Viennese Gemischter Satz.
This traditional field blend has a very long history in Viennese viticulture. A wealth of grape varieties grow side-by-side in the same vineyard, and all these grapes are harvested and pressed at the exact same time. This is different to a standard blended wine, where the young wines are generally fermented separately and then blended together by the winemaker later.
You could say that for the Gemischter Satz, the marriage of grape varieties begins right there in nature. It is not only a typical terroir wine, it also stands as a symbol and reflection of true Viennese culture. To produce this traditional wine to the absolute highest possible quality is our paramount goal.
A collaborative craft
Working with a dedicated and experienced team that has shaped the vineyards for many years is particularly important to me. Their hard-earned knowledge, passion, and commitment to quality form the absolute foundation for continuous development and consistency. Wine is always a collaborative effort – out in the vineyard, deep in the cellar, and through our interactions with one another.
For me, winemaking means passion, a deep sense of responsibility, and the pure joy of being part of a unique tradition that connects the past and the future in a truly special way.
