I first came to Low Newton and The Ship Inn in May 1999. I wanted to move away from Hertfordshire where I had lived for the last thirty years. I needed to earn a living and I had heard that there was a pub for sale in a village by the sea. I had done various jobs in my life and run my own business, but the one business I knew I didn't want to run was a pub! However - I came, I saw and Low Newton conquered!! Not for me the sensible option of coming up to stay for a week, to watch the pub in operation to see if I could cope with the whole business of running a pub, of meeting the locals and seeing if they would welcome this woman from the south. Oh no. So six weeks later I arrived, complete with an enormous furniture van, three cats, two dogs and my youngest daughter Hannah who had just finished university and had decided to spend eighteen months with me running the pub. The rest is, as they say, history. 17 years on the pub is still receiving the t.l.c it needs; I have learned to clean lines, order beer, call time - or not as case might be - pull pints and have good craic. I have totally renovated the upstairs and have a wonderful house to live in. Hannah is again running the pub with me, having taken time out to travel, teach, marry and have children: we have a growing reputation for local food, good coffee and live music and are self sufficient in well regarded real ale from our own micro brewery. The sea and landscape continues to delight. To stand on the beach on a moonlight night and hear the seals calling from the rocks, to watch the path of the moon on the sea and see the fingers of Dunstanburgh castle stand black against the sky or to watch the sun rise over the sea on a glorious summer morning - these are the things that make Low Newton the very special and unique place it is. And make people return time and again. Christine Forsyth The ship inn brewery In March 2008, after 9 months of converting our garage, a long held ambition of mine was realised with the opening of our very own Ship Inn Brewery. We were very fortunate to secure the excellent services of brewer Michael Hegarty and our initial brews of Ship Hop Ale, Sandcastles at Dawn and Dolly Day Dream were very well received. Six years on and the brewery has moved from strength to strength. The pub is now self sufficient in real ale, with beer brewed on the premises and rolled a mere 10ft from brewery to cellar. The word local has come to mean just that, and with no deliveries from other brewers we have significantly reduced our carbon footprint. We are very lucky to have Michael as our brewer, his flair and creativity gives us beautifully balanced and innovative beers. The brewery now produces over 26 well acclaimed beers ranging from Dolly Daydream, a premium bitter, to Sea Coal, a dark wheat beer. From December 10th 2010 we began to bottle our beers which are available exclusively from The Ship. For the beer buffs amongst you, facts and figures! Brewery opened March 2008 Kit consisted of six 2 ½ brewers barrels Vessels capable of producing five brewers barrels per week Two extra vessels commissioned Christmas 2009 Brewery now produces : 7 ½ brewers barrels per week Or 24 x 9 gallon casks per week Or 1,728 pints! We produce over 20 different beers 16 beers are brewed in constant rotation We brew three times per week All beers are to be bottled
