The Gouguenheim story: from city banker to Mendoza masters
For Patricio Gouguenheim, a lifelong love affair with wine started early. Born in Argentina to French parents, he was given his very first taste at just seven years old (mixed with a splash of sparkling water, of course). It was the catalyst for an incredible, unpredictable career.
Fast forward a few decades, and Patricio was a high-flying city banker dealing in mergers and acquisitions. But between 1999 and 2002, his work kept taking him to the foothills of the Andes in Mendoza. Smitten by the desert climate – where very hot days and very cold nights create the perfect conditions for growing refined, ripe fruit – he had a hunch that Argentine wines were about to take the world by storm.
So, in 2002, right in the middle of a massive economic crash when GDP plummeted and everyone else was fleeing the market, Patricio did the unthinkable. He quit his prosperous career, spent his life savings on an old winery with small tanks, and took a massive leap of faith.
"I hung up my suit and tie, and started working in the great outdoors," Patricio once recalled. "And, well, forgive my immodesty... but I was right!"
An original Naked hero
Patricio was one of the original gang of winemakers who backed Naked from the very start. His insanely smooth, ridiculously drinkable Malbecs became the stuff of legend, and Angels stuck by him for over 15 years.
He always got a huge kick out of sharing his hard work with the community, famously noting: "I love the fact that I’m creating something that can be shared with others. I feel as though I’m spreading some sense of Argentina all around the world, and I find it a great privilege to be filling the wine glasses of people I’ve never met."
The passing of the torch
Growing up surrounded by those same Mendoza vines, Patricio's son Gonzalo always had harvests in his blood. But the true turning point came when he experienced his first full vintage from vineyard to bottle.
"Seeing how small decisions in the vineyard shaped the final wine fascinated me," Gonzalo explains. "I realised winemaking is a balance of agriculture, science, and intuition – and that combination captured me completely."
Following Patricio's sad passing, Gonzalo and his brother Santiago took the reins. Making decisions side by side, they took on what Gonzalo calls the most challenging and meaningful chapter of his career: honouring his father's original vision while confidently moving the family winery forward.
Today, the Gouguenheim philosophy is all about letting the vineyard speak for itself. Favouring minimal intervention, early hand-harvesting, and gentle extraction, the brothers champion balance, freshness, and pure elegance. It’s about honest expressions of place and careful craftsmanship rather than heavy-handed winemaking.
The next chapter of Mendoza magic

With Angels backing them every step of the way, Gonzalo and Santiago are continuing to refine their vineyard work. By focusing on stunning single-vineyard expressions that truly reflect the magic of high-altitude Mendoza, they are carrying forward everything their father taught them – ensuring the Gouguenheim name remains synonymous with the absolute best of Argentina.
