Considering that since 1869 we have not budged one single inch from our original site and bearing in mind that we still employ the finest Victorian brewing equipment which is just as good as the day it was first used you might think the Caley has enjoyed an untroubled history. Far from it. In reality we've been through more ups and downs than a Deuchars handpull. We were born out of the flames of a tragic fire: founder George Lorimer's father perished in a fire at Edinburgh's Theatre Royal and young George used the money he inherited to start the brewery. We have suffered two calamitous blazes since, but survived. The brewery has passed through many hands and came within a whisker of closing in the 1980s. The lows only serve to accentuate the highs. Lorimer's Scotch Ale in the old days and Deuchars IPA more recently were so good they changed brewing for ever. And the fact that we're still here, still creating beer in the way that our founders would recognise, is perhaps the greatest triumph of all.
