Bordeaux dynamo Romain creates super fine wines at the historic Chateau Fonplegade
-
A proper Bordeaux boy, Romain’s earliest childhood memories are of following his grandad through the vines in his small family vineyard. It was growing up here that Romain learnt a love of all things nature. Even then, he knew in his heart, he was destined to become a winemaker.
-
Now a 20-year winemaking veteran, Romain heads-up the historic Chateau Fonplegade, where grapevines have thrived since the late 1500s. Like a dynamo, he zips from cellar to vineyard to office, working with his team to create the finest wines possible.
-
Despite growing up in traditional old Bordeaux, Romain is as open-minded as they come. In his early years he worked in the Napa Valley, where he discovered the incredible diversity of Californian wines. And getting to meet passionate folks from wildly different wine cultures was a real lightbulb moment for Romain. That’s why, each year, he recruits new winemakers from all around the world to work at Chateau Fonplegade, it’s his way of giving a little back and sharing his experience and passion with the world.

Romain Gonzalez's Story
My name is Romain Gonzalez, I am a 35-years-old pure product of Bordeaux.
As far as I remember, I grew up in the middle of the vines following my grandfather in his small vineyard. He passed me down his love for Nature and his long life experience observing how all the elements work together. So it was a natural choice for me to work in the vineyard and make wine. Actually there was no other options possible in my heart.
My first experience outside of the family estate was in 2003 and I remember it because it was a very solar vintage and I faced many challenges already for a first. Even the difficulty of this vintage I knew. So I can say today that 2022 is my 19th vintage and I’m looking forward to many to come.
I start my day with a coffee during our daily meeting with the cellar and vineyard teams. We discuss what are the tasks of the day and sometimes for the following days according to the vines needs and the weather.
Then usually I go back to the office to take care of all the administrative works and also to discuss with the other Fonplegade teams about the current projects.
Later on in the morning, I try to go and check if the vineyard team faces any difficulties and if some adjustments need to be done. Their feedback is essential for me as they are the closest to the vines. And then I like to take a moment to walk through the vineyard to revitalise myself and to think about the improvements that we can do and the potential future projects.
Around 1 pm, I take a break to take care of my dog and a quick lunch.
I restarted the afternoon with a meeting with our cellar master. We discuss about the daily tasks in the cellar. We try to taste the wines as often as possible to follow how the wines change along the year and take our decisions in order to respect each vintage.
I end each day by writing a daily report and plan the next days for the teams.
When Mrs and Mr Adams bought the Chateau Fonplégade in 2004, they had a vision of a resilient vineyard and making wines with the finest expression of the terroir. Since then, they supported us and gave us the resources to achieve their vision. But nothing could have been possible without our dedicated teams who take care of each vines day after day.
I went to San Francisco to work in Napa Valley in my early years. It was my first time travelling so far from home. But discovering the diversity of California wines was so interesting and worth it. I’ve also met many passionate people with different cultures so what seemed to be crazy, ended up to enrich me tremendously.
So that’s why every year, as agreed with Fonplégade philosophy, I especially like to hire interns from around the world to give a little bit back and to exchange experiences and passion.
I am very interested by music in general which helps me disconnect often reminds me of wine because we can find similarities with the wine. For me, just like in wine, the construction of a melody must have a good balance and a strong energy to make us vibrate.
The sum of my encounters and exchanges allows me today to draw the contours of my vision of wine. Each person can bring us something positive and make us evolve. I am even sure that in a few years these exchanges will refine the features of my own philosophy in this profession.
The most memorable moment is every time we share with the team the success of a vintage. I remember and feel very well the pain as much as the joy that this wonderful job can bring.
Finding power in the wines while respecting the harmony of it is the biggest challenge. The 2016 vintage is a perfect example of a vintage with a beautiful power that had to be controlled so as not to pass over an unwanted balance.
Each wine is the fruit of the whole Fonplégade’s team work. We try to enhance our terroirs and to show every year the finest expression of our grapes. We hope our customer could enjoy and feel our sincerity and our passion in each bottle.
My dream project would be to be able to produce a wine without any inputs in order to be the pure expression of the terroir, and to be in harmony with all the environmental elements.
