Lighter reds for summer chilling

Ready to ignore the old-school rules? Put your reds in the fridge where they belong.

Yes, some reds belong in the fridge

When the sun’s out, most people leave their reds to gather dust until the leaves turn brown, save for the odd barbecue or two.

But don’t write red wine off just because someone dragged the garden chairs out and declared it whites-and-rosés season. Some reds are brilliant served chilled in the sunshine – you just need to pick the right ones.

Look out for the “Chill me” badge on our website to find them.

First things first: chilled red is not weird

In fact, ask most winemakers and they’ll tell you the same thing – lots of reds taste even better with a little coolness to them.

The thing is, old rules about serving red at room temperature were written for draughty old houses and castle-like dining rooms – not modern kitchens and sunny patios.

So in real life, “room temperature” usually means: a bit cooler than that.

It doesn’t take much. Just 20-30 minutes in the fridge makes the right red feel brighter, fresher and much more at home in the sunshine.

What makes a red fridge-friendly?

As with all things in wine, taste is personal. But for spring and summer, we usually look for reds with:

  • Lighter body

  • Fresher fruit (think summer berries)

  • Mouth-watering acidity

  • Softer tannins

  • Less oak

  • And often a little less alcohol too

In other words, this is not the moment for your big, oaky powerhouse reds. You want bottles that feel easy-going and very happy to be poured alongside a plate of nibbles in the garden (or nothing at all).

Why climate matters: cool reds come from cool places

A lot of the best reds for chilling come from places where freshness can be preserved naturally.

Cooler climates and higher-altitude sites often produce grapes with brighter acidity, more delicate fruit and less of that jammy, baked character that can feel a bit heavy in warm weather.

That’s part of why styles like Pinot Noir and Gamay work so well. They’re typically planted – and perfectly suited – to cool climates. So come naturally built with lift and freshness from the start.

Need help picking your chilled reds? Look for these…

Pinot Noir: silky, fragrant and full of bright red fruit, Pinot Noir is the classic lighter red for a reason. Its thin skins help give it that soft, elegant texture that works beautifully with a slight chill.

Beaujolais: one of the all-time great sunshine reds. Made from Gamay, Beaujolais is typically super juicy, packed with crunchy berry and cherry flavours, and best enjoyed young.

Rioja Joven: a younger, fruitier, often unoaked style of Rioja. Look for Joven or Rioja that leads on the grape name (e.g. Tempranillo or Garnacha) rather than a Crianza or Reserva.

Cinsault: the ultimate big softy. Cinsault can smell dark and brooding, then surprise you by being light and soft on the palate. A brilliant chilled red when you still want a bit of oomph.

Grenache: another very good shout when you want plenty of flavour without too much weight – look for cooler climate Garnacha. Expect juicy red fruit, soft spice and that smooth, easy-drinking texture.

Zweigelt: Austria’s favourite red grape deserves more attention. Smooth, bright and cherry-led, with soft tannins and an easy-going feel that makes it ideal for warmer days.

Valpolicella: famously food-friendly – Valpolicella has that lovely Italian knack for feeling effortlessly delicious. The kind of red that makes you want lunch to go on a bit longer.

Port: a wildcard worth making room for. Not the most obvious summer pick, but a fruitier ruby or LBV Port can be a brilliant after-dinner pour when served slightly cool – especially with dark chocolate, summer berries… or drizzled over vanilla ice cream when you’re feeling extra rebellious.
